Again, as Children of the Lord we are all equal (see Life and Dignity of the Human Person). In this, that means we all deserve respect no matter what. Our society is torn between r
ich and poor, glamorous and not-so-glamorous, and smart and not smart at all. Should this determine how much respect someone gets? What if we add vulnerability or disability? Does that mean they get more or less respect? No, it doesn’t. Yes, the disable and vulnerable usually get high concerns and many people watch out for them, etc. But no one gets more respect than the next. We all have to make up our minds; will I help the man in a wheelchair asking for money to get some food for the night, or will I assume he’s just a panhandler and keep driving in my 2010 Cadillac STX? What should you do…? How do you know if the man is poor, disabled, and vulnerable? Don’t go by if the man looks like he’s being honest. Look at the man, realize he is your brother, and offer him the amount of what you are capable of giving. I’m not saying that when we see someone in a wheelchair we should rush to their rescue, most of the time they are fine. But it truly is a moral test in society nowadays. We go about passing the “test” by putting your priorities aside and seeing how you can truly help the poor, and by paying attention to the silent needs that scream help.
We all walk, talk and act in different ways. We all answer to the call of helping these people in different ways. Will we go out and actually help these people in as many ways as you know how, or maybe even just doing what you think is fair. Many of these people face depressed, and usually their minds are gone. This all means that, while they sit asking desperately for your help, they don’t see that they can go get help. They are so accustomed to poverty and things of that nature. Because of the fact that they don’t see the equal rights (human dignity) they have, it’s very important that we all pitch in and help them. So what we all need to do, is to help them get back on their feet and show them their equal rights again and make sure they have an equal participation in society as all of us. There are millions of Americans that are facing these problems, what can you do to help?
